Root Legal supports companies, organisations and citizens in complex legal challenges regarding privacy and security. The firm is founded by Ot van Daalen.

Ot van Daalen is an attorney specialised in privacy and security. In 2009 he relaunched the digital rights movement Bits of Freedom. As the director, he was closely involved in the creation of legislation in the field of privacy and internet freedom. He also worked at the Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens, the Dutch DPA, esponsible for investigations into internet companies and the drafting of Article 29 Working Party opinions.

His knowledge of technology and his broad experience in public affairs and media set him apart as an attorney. Now he uses this unique experience to support companies, organisations and citizens, in court as well as in politics and in the media.

In addition to his work as an attorney, Ot van Daalen is a lecturer at the Institute for Information Law of the University of Amsterdam. Ot is a member of the Dutch Association for Privacy Law and the Association for Media- and Communications Law. Before launching Bits of Freedom, he worked for years at the first-tier commercial law firm De Brauw Blackstone Westbroek, representing clients in the high-tech- and telecommunications sectors. Ot studied at the University of Amsterdam and Columbia University in New York. He is an experienced speaker and is often asked as expert in the media.

Root Legal makes clear arrangements on the price of its services and applies reduced rates for NGO’s, startups and special cases. It is possible to agree on a fixed fee or a take a subscription on the basis of a retainer.
